President Obama continues his call for a return to American values, including fairness and equality, as part of his blueprint for an economy built to last.
Tea Party supporters across the nation let out a collective cheer, when Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski conceded victory in the recent primary to her Tea Party-backed opponent Joe Miller. In admitting defeat Murkowski gave up the Republican nomination for senator to Miller, an attorney.
After last week’s primary election was too close to call, election officials began counting absentee ballots. As of Tuesday 15,000 of the 25,000 ballots were counted and the political vet Murkowski still trailed her novice opponent by 1,630 votes.
Looking a the numbers Murkowski decided to throw in the towel.
"I do not see a scenario where the primary will turn out in my favor. For that reason, and for the good of the state of Alaska, I am conceding the race for the Republican nomination,” Murkowski confessed.
Miller’s victory was a huge upset and major boost to the Tea Party movement. The anti-government organization has been trying to flex its political muscle by throwing its support (and dollars) at like-minded candidates.
Former Alaska governor and Tea Party favorite Sara Palin endorsed Miller. Palin took a liking to his everyday man, anti-government stance.
Miller acknowledged the support he received, saying, "I need to thank others who provided vital support to this campaign including Governor Sarah Palin, Governor Mike Huckabee, and the Tea Party movement."
Though she vowed to be back next year, Murkowski may have to reestablish her name within the GOP. Most Republicans blame her for the loss pointing out that she didn’t take her opponent seriously.
As for Miller he’s eager to begin the next step where he’ll face Sitka Mayor Scott McAdams for the open senate seat.
